Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
